Even a car's GPS system can be a little iffy. Have a good paper map because there are a lot of areas in the area north of Walla Walla that have no cell reception. I am partial to Lyons Ferry but maybe because my grandma's aunt, Olive Lyons, ran the ferry across the Snake River and my grandma told many stories of spending time there as a young girl with her aunt. I think the Snake River in that area is beautiful in its own way. There are lots of grain elevators and barns to photograph in that area. Maybe drive on Highway 124 on your way to Palouse Falls and go north at Clyde, then back down through Dayton and Waitsburg to Walla Walla. There are a lot more of those than grapes. Also, think about photographing the wheat fields. and hopefully catch an infamous sturgeon! Doesn’t matter if you’re new to WA or a native, the Columbia River is a place to experience.Īnswer: Palouse Falls is the opposite direction from the Hanford Reach so I don't think that would be a great combination. We may have to look into some of the fishing expeditions along the Columbia River next time too, and really get another view of this mini Grand Canyon-esk region in WA. I highly recommend stopping in Stevenson at the Big River Grill, which I made sure to review as well. Tons a little lakes and waterfalls, places to fish or kayak, that next time we will have to stop and enjoy park and recreational areas that will be fun to take the kids to, and small towns along the way with non-chain restaurant food options. The River and Columbia gorge were breathtaking and a site we can’t wait to drive through again. There were so many awesome changes in terrain from dry rocky peaks, to mossy ferns reaching to the road, to snow, and then as we got closer to Vancouver, back to green lush landscape. We finished our drive driving West along the WA side of the Columbia River hitting it around 1pm and had the pleasure of seeing in on a blue bird day. My husband and I looped around SW WA for an impromptu day trip.
